How to check if your can is affected

  1. Find the codes on the can. The lot code and best-by date are printed or stamped on the bottom of most cans, and near the seam on bags and pouches.
  2. Match brand, recipe and size. A notice usually names exact recipes and sizes, not a whole brand.
  3. Compare the lot and date. Only the lot codes and best-by dates listed in the notice are part of the recall.
  4. If it matches, stop feeding it. Keep the can or a photo of the code, follow the company’s refund instructions, and call your vet if your cat is unwell.

Questions about cat food recalls

Is there a cat food recall right now?

The most recent cat food notice we track was posted on August 28, 2026: Northwest Naturals (salmonella). Recalls cover specific lots and dates, so check the lot code and best-by date on your can against the notice. We last reviewed FDA notices on October 26, 2026.

How do I check if my cat food is part of a recall?

Find the lot code and best-by date printed on the bottom or side of the can or bag, then compare them with the product list in the recall notice. Only the listed lots are affected, not every can of that recipe.

What should I do if my cat’s food is recalled?

Stop feeding it, keep the can or bag (or a photo of the lot code) and follow the company’s instructions for a refund. If your cat has symptoms, call your vet. You can report a problem with pet food to the FDA through its Safety Reporting Portal or your state’s FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator.

Why are most cat food recalls about salmonella or listeria?

Bacterial contamination is the most common reason pet food is recalled, especially for raw and freeze-dried foods. Canned food is heat-sterilized in the can, so its recalls are more often about nutrient levels or foreign material.
